CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

“Well?” Freya said when they were in the car and heading away from the Donovan house. “What did you learn?”

The question went unanswered, and Freya glanced across at Ben only to find him engrossed in his phone.

“Deborah was telling me about her job,” she said. “She’s a vampire. She sucks the blood out of late-night customers.”

“Eh?” Ben said dozily. Then, when what Freya had said was finally digested, “What are you talking about?”

“I was just trying to get your attention,” she replied.

“Sorry. Hart sent through Stella Green’s address. I was trying to find it on the map.”

“Am I going in the right direction?” Freya asked, and Ben looked up, checked their surroundings, and then sighed.

“Sea Lane,” he replied.

“As in, the same Sea Lane–”

“That leads to the marsh, yes,” he said. “And the same one the holiday park is on.”

“Well, that makes things easier, doesn’t it? Let’s pay her a visit, and then, with any luck we can go and enjoy a dinner and a movie.”

“Oh, don’t remind me,” Ben said. “I bet, if you added up all the hours I’ve spent watching CCTV footage of one description or another, it would amount to actual days of my life. Not hours. Days.”

“Ditto,” she said. “But it’s all we’ve got so far. From what we saw earlier, we should see anybody who either left the park or walked passed it towards the marshes.”

“Yeah, right, about fifty dog walkers and some joggers. Not to mention the odd couple heading over there in search of a private moment under the stars.”

“Those are the ones we want,” she said. “The late-nighters. The people out there in the dark who might have seen something, or somebody.”

“Right, and how many of those are involved in affairs? They’re hardly likely to hold their hands up and risk everything. You know what they’re like. How many times do we come across affairs? It’s always the same.”

“You’re looking at it the wrong way,” she told him. “If we can identify someone who has no good reason for being there other than to meet their lover, then we have leverage.”

“And there it is,” Ben said, slapping his thigh for good measure. “The low blow. Destroyer of lives.”

“I prefer catcher of killers,” she said, setting free the smirk that was dying to spread across her face. “Whatever it takes.”

“Here it is,” Ben said, pointing at a bungalow set back from the road. Freya pulled to one side, checked her mirror, and then reversed the thirty yards until they stopped outside the house. “No upsetting anybody. Just see if you can do it. You might even feel good about it.”

Freya unclipped her seat belt and let it slide across her body, watching his eyes follow its path.

“One day,” he said, “I’d love to get inside your head. Just one day. That’s all I need.”

“You wouldn’t want to go there,” she told him as they climbed from the car and met over the bonnet. “The truth is, I don’t think you’d ever look me in the eye again if you knew what my sordid little mind is capable of conjuring.
